Celina Rodrigo (Marietta, Ga.) has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball next season at The University of Texas, head coach Karen Aston announced Wednesday. Rodrigo will join the Longhorns for the 2012-13 season.
“I am thrilled to add Celina to the Texas Women’s Basketball class of 2012,” Aston said. “’Cee,’ as everyone calls her, has the ability to push the tempo and see the floor very well, which will fit right into our style. She gives us the true point guard mentality, and along with Ashley Roberts, will fill a huge void our team had going into the upcoming season.”
A 2012 McDonald’s All-American nominee, the 5-8 Rodrigo was named to Georgia’s All-State and Final 44 (top girls and boys basketball players in the state) as a senior at Hillgrove HS. Rodrigo’s accolades also include the All-Metro Atlanta, Marietta Daily All-County, All-Cobb County Tip-Off Club and All-Region Teams.
Listed as a Top-100 Recruit by the All-Star Girls Report and the ESPN’s HoopGurlz No. 40 guard in the class of 2012, Rodrigo is the only player in Hillgrove history to record over 1,000 career points and 600 assists. She owns the Georgia 5A single-game record with 17 assists.
“Not only is Cee a great student of the game, her goals are equally high in the classroom. She truly fits that mold of a student-athlete here at Texas. I actually knew her from my time spent on the East Coast at Charlotte and had developed a relationship with her before my departure. As fate would have it, we both made changes and the timing could not have been better,” Aston added.
On the club scene, Rodrigo played for coach Percy Gordon and the national champion Georgia Pistols. She was also named to the Nike National Silver Championship Team.
“Cee is a basketball player’s point guard and has always placed winning in front of personal accolades and achievements,” Gordon said. “Texas is getting one of the top point guards in the country that brings along an unmatched work ethic and desire to win.”
