AUSTIN, Texas - Senior Kim Bruins pitched a shutout and helped her cause offensively with two hits and three runs batted in as No.7/9 Texas defeated Texas A&M Corpus Christi 8-0 in five innings Saturday night at Red & Charline McCombs Field. With a victory Texas improves 4-0 while the Islanders fall to 0-4.

Bruins (1-0) allowed just five hits and struck out six without walking a batter in the compete game. Ashley Elicerio (0-2) threw four-and-two-thirds innings, allowing eight runs on eight hits and five walks.

After TAMUCC stranded two runners in the top of the first, Texas broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the inning with a run by senior Taylor Hoagland. Hoagland walked, sole second, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a Bruin’s sacrifice fly.

In the bottom of the third, Texas broke the game open with five runs and took a 6-0 lead. With Brejae Washington on second base with one out, Bruins hit her second career home run during a game she was pitching with a liner to left center to extend the lead to 3-0. After back-to-back walks and a throwing error by the Islanders, Holly Kern and Karina Scott were in scoring position. Torie Schmidt reached on a fielding error and Kern advanced to third while Scott scored for a 4-0 advantage. With runners at second and third, Mandy Ogle delivered a double to right center to bring in Kern and Scott for the six-run edge.

The Islanders tried to answer in the top of the fourth with consecutive singles from Katelyn Potts and Elicerio, but a strikeout, fielder's choice and pop out left the pair on base.

In the bottom of the frame, Texas pushed the lead to 7-0 as Hoagland reached second on a fielding error, advanced third on a wild pitch, and scored on freshman Stephanie Ceo’s single up the middle.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi had another chance to score in the top of the fifth with runners on the corners and one out. Bruins kept the shutout intact by inducing a groundout and strikeout.

Texas ended the game in the bottom of the fifth with Marlee Gebaldon’s first career triple, which drove in freshman Lindsey Stephens for the eight-run rule.

Sunday, the Longhorns play for the Texas Classic Championship at noon against the winner of tonight's Memphis versus North Texas contest.
