San Marcos, Texas – Joel Wright and Deonte' Jones combined for 45 points today – the first time a pair of Bobcats scored 20 or more points in a game in almost two years. The duo's performance was not enough however, as Texas State fell to UT Arlington, 91-74 at Strahan Coliseum.
Wright netted 24 points (8-for-12), while Jones chipped in a career-high 21 points (8-for-14). Texas State (4-14, 0-6 WAC) was 27-for-59 from the floor (45.8%) and 8-of-16 from the free throw line (50%).
After being down by 10 points at the half, Jones made three of Texas State's four treys in the first five minutes of play to cut UTA's lead to four points. The Bobcats kept nipping at the Mavericks and stayed within arm's reach for the majority of the half.
It was a three-point play by UTA's Greg Gainey that gave the Mavericks an 11-point lead with seven minutes remaining. UTA's momentum carried them on a 10-0 run with four minutes to go. Texas State went cold only connecting on 2-of-7 from the floor over the final minutes of play, as it dropped its sixth conference game of the season.
The Mavericks (8-6, 3-2 WAC) shot 57.1 percent from the floor and 71.4 percent from the free throw line. UT Arlington had four players finish in double figures. Karol Gruszecki had 23 points, including seven made three-pointers. Kevin Butler added 15 points, while Jordan Reves and Cameron Catlett tacked on 11 points. Brandon Edwards had a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds.
Texas State will travel to San Antonio next weekend to face UTSA on Saturday, Jan. 19. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m.
