The local boxing community is remembering boxer Hector “Macho” Camacho, who was shot in the head last Tuesday and died Saturday from his injuries.

The 50-year-old was known for his showmanship in the ring. During his 30-year career, Camacho won several titles in different weight classes.

Richard Lord of Lord’s Boxing Gym here in Austin crossed paths with the fighter several times during his own career as a professional fighter.

Lord says Camacho will be remembered for his natural ability and flamboyant style.

"He could hit you with punches that you are not supposed to be able to hit from that particular kind of angle,” he said. “He didn't fit the mold of a typical boxer and he was able to do things that other people couldn't do."

After he retired from boxing, Camacho battled drug addiction and made headlines for his run-ins with the law.

He was shot in the face outside of a bar in his hometown of Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

No arrests have been made at this time.
