San Marcos, Texas – The Texas State football team wraps up its spring practice with the annual Maroon-Gold Spring Game at Bobcat Stadium on Saturday, March 31. Kickoff for the game is slated for 2:00 p.m.
The two teams for the game will be selected on Wednesday with a player draft being held inside the End Zone Complex at 3:15 p.m. This marks the second year that the two teams have been selected via a player draft.
“The primary concern in deciding to have the draft was the offensive line,” said head coach Dennis Franchione. “We have had enough rotation this spring and it isn’t completely settled, so it wasn’t that big of a deal. This also allows us to do the kicking live with every aspect. To do that, we had to get enough bodies on both teams.
Adley Eshraghipour, Shaun Rutherford, Marcus Curry, Brian Lilly, Jason McLean and Isaiah Battle will be the choose one team in the draft, while Thaddeus Watkins, Tyler Arndt, Chase Harper, Darryl Morris and Joplo Bartu will chose the other team.
Those players along with the potential addition of Jordan Norfleet will serve as Texas State’s Leadership Council for next season. The members of the leadership council also serve as game captains for the 2012 season with permanent season team captains being chosen by the players prior to the final game against New Mexico State.
Coaches for the Maroon and Gold teams will be named by Franchione after the draft is complete. He will serve as a commentator on Texas State’s radio broadcast of the game. The other announcers will be Brant Freeman calling the play-by-play and Bill Culhane serving as an analyst. The game can be heard live on KTSW (89.9 FM) in San Marcos and on the www.txstatebobcats.com website.
In addition to the spring game, the Second Annual Coach Fran Charities 5K Run and Walk will take place on Saturday morning beginning at 8:30 a.m. and will benefit CASA, a child advocacy program that speaks up for abused and neglected children.
Participants for each race can pre-register for the race by March 30 at 11:59 p.m. at www.CoachFranCharities.org. The pre-registered costs for competing in the race are $25 for adults and $15 for students and children.
Packet pickup for pre-registered participants is between 6:30-8:15 a.m. on Saturday at the Jerry D. and Linda Gregg Fields West Side Complex at Bobcat Stadium.
Franchione will present medals the top three overall finishers in each race as well as the top three finishers in each age category. All participants receive a free race T-shirt and are eligible to win raffle prizes that include as an autographed football.
