The border continues to draw attention nationwide, as Gov. Rick Perry sends Texas National Guard troops to help address the situation. And while Congress remains at a stalemate over how to handle the situation, churches are continuing to open their doors to provide refuge. We joined our reporter LeAnn Wallace in the Rio Grande Valley to see firsthand how the area has adjusted to meet the needs of this unique population.

Plus, Peggy Fikac of the San Antonio Express-News and the Houston Chronicle, Jonathan Tilove with the Austin American-Statesman and Texas Monthly editor Brian Sweany sat down with us to discuss the consequences of the border crisis for Gov. Perry's political future, along with the likelihood of Congress dealing with it before lawmakers head home.

Reporter Roundtable

Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate Greg Abbott released a new ad in theaters this week, and some film fans have a lot to say about it. As Jonathan Tilove explained, Abbott apparently targeted specific theaters whose viewers leaned more conservative. And although his Democratic opponent, Sen. Wendy Davis, took to Twitter to respond, the governor's race has been fairly quiet this summer. Our Reporter Roundtable discussed if, just like this Texas weather, things are starting to heat back up.

Checking the Facts

Gov. Rick Perry was the focus of Friday's PolitiFact segment. Gardner Selby with PolitiFact Texas and the Statesman looked into two border-related claims made by the governor. First, the claim that undocumented immigrants committed 3,000 homicides in the past year got a second look. Then, we investigated the governor's claim that he's heard nothing back from the White House since contacting the president in 2012 regarding border security.
