An inmate briefly escaped from the Travis County Correctional Complex in Del Valle on Thursday morning.

According to a sheriff's office spokesman, Edmond Henry, 42, overpowered a sheriff’s deputy and stole his truck about 7:00 a.m.

Henry drove the truck north on FM 973 and was spotted by a Bastrop County deputy sheriff running the red light at Highway 71 East. When the deputy began to chase him, Henry crashed the truck into a utility pole at Terry Lane and Meldrum Road.

The inmate ran from the scene but was caught by Travis County sheriff's deputies in the 2800 Block of Hwy 71 East about 7:30 a.m. Henry's escape lasted 21 minutes.

Henry was taken to the hospital for minor injuries and has since been returned to the jail. He was first arrested March 6 for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, evading arrest and a parole violation.

He is now also charged with escape while arrested and confined, a third-degree felony carrying a bond of $10,000, and he is charged again with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, a state jail felony carrying a bond of $50,000. ClientIP:,, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
