When you think of Austin’s hot spots, what comes to mind first? A popular answer used to be East Sixth Street, but that has changed.

Austin Business Journal Editor Colin Pope said business owners on East Sixth Street, commonly known as ‘Dirty Sixth,’ say they have been beaten by their own game. Meaning, areas like Rainey Street and the Red River District have taken a lot of their foot traffic.

City leaders noticed this trend and approved a $19 million effort for infrastructure improvements on Sixth Street between Congress Avenue and Interstate-35.
