The city of Fredericksburg wants to welcome you home for Christmas.

“We’re family,” Fredericksburg Mayor Jeryl Hoover said. “We’re a community and we like to provide everyone that hometown feel.”

The town’s marketplatz plaza is decorated with traditional German Christmas decorations, including a 26-foot pyramid.

Michael Wetz and his family came from Corpus Christi to see the pyramid light up.

“I thought, 'Well I hope my kids don’t crawl in that and destroy it before it gets lit,'” Wetz said. “We’ve heard about this for several years now, and so we wanted to come up and be part of the festivities.”

With the flip of a switch, downtown was transformed into a holiday wonderland.

“What we have are just people that want to celebrate the good things of life,” Hoover said. “A lot of things going on in the country these days, there’s a lot of people in turmoil, a lot of situations of turmoil. People feel safe, they feel good here, they feel like this is a place we can come and feel like good old hometown America.”

Carols fill the air as families capture Christmas memories around the tree ---and pyramid--in downtown's main square.

“Everybody feels at Christmas time that they want to go somewhere that feels like home and sometimes in the big cities that doesn’t work so well,” Hoover said.

In addition to holiday lights, you can take in some ice skating in downtown Fredericksburg through the New Year. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
