Standing three stories above the rest of Hutto, the East Williamson County Higher Education Center is the largest building in town.

Temple College and Texas State Technical College Waco built the almost $20 million building, with a capacity of 2,200 students.

"We are about 118,000 square feet," Robin Ray, the center’s director, said. "We are starting up smaller in the fall semester and we will expand our classes in the spring."

About 350 students will walk the brand new halls and fill 21 classrooms.

The building is an asset to the community in many ways. A multi-purpose room, for instance, can either be three classes or a conference room that can fit more than 100 people. City leaders are looking forward to using this space for meetings or presentations.

Hutto Economic Development Corporation CEO Joey Grisham says it's also the anchor for economic growth.

"Companies are attracted to universities because of their technology and also the workforce," Grisham said.

Also, students and teachers will be putting money into the local economy.

"You're talking about 500 to 1,000 people right off the bat that will be right here in the community, so that's immediate dollars into the city coffers," Grisham said.

The growth can also attract retailers.

"As student enrollment grows, we will continue to build," Ray said.

Fourteen buildings are planned for the 57 acre site.
