The new H-E-B grocery store in East Austin’s Mueller development opened Friday and many neighbors say it’s a long time coming.
H-E-B officials tout the new store as the most environmentally friendly store in its chain. New features include solar panels, reflective roofing and LED lights throughout its refrigerated and frozen food sections.
"This store uses 80 percent less power than any other HEB,” Leslie Sweet, an H-E-B spokesperson, said. “It uses 65 percent less freshwater, so it's a remarkable, innovative store."
The H-E-B at Mueller will serve as the company’s first test store for environmental sustainability.
The new store also offers more organic produce than most other H-E-B locations and also hosts a restaurant named Café Mueller.
The San Antonio-based grocery chain has more than 350 stores across the Lone Star State and in Mexico.
