The name of a Killeen Police officer killed early Sunday morning in a shootout with an armed has been released.
Officer Robert (Bobby) Hornsby, 32, was fatally wounded when a man wielding an AK-47 open fired on officers who were attempting to take him into custody.
Officers were called to Grandon Manor Apartments in Killeen at 11:40 p.m. Saturday where the man allegedly threatened people at the apartment complex pool with a firearm. A Tactical Response Unit was called to the scene when the man was uncooperative with officers who responded.
The man approached his door as if he were willing to be taken into custody, but when officers approached, he went back into his apartment and retrieved an AK-47.
Hornsby and the suspect were killed in a firefight that followed. Officer Juan E. Obregon Jr., 33, suffered a serious a gunshot wound to the leg. He is now in stable condition.
Killeen police said they’re mourning the loss of the fallen officer.
Hornsby was a four-year veteran of the department and a member of the Tactical Response Unit. He leaves behind a wife and two children, a 4-year-old daughter and a 1-year-old son.
Obregon has been an officer with the department for 10 years and was also a member of the Tactical Response Unit.
The name of the suspect killed in the incident is being withheld by police pending notification of his next of kin.
