Williamson County man arrested for cross-state animal poaching

  • Text size: + -

State and county officials seized a stash of marijuana, cash and a collection of illegally killed animals from a Williamson County home over the weekend.

They also arrested a 55-year-old man, who has not been named.

The unusual quarry was recovered following a six-month investigation that started in Iowa. A hunting outfitter there tipped off authorities after becoming suspicious of a man driving a truck with Texas license plates. A subsequent investigation showed the man was involved in identity theft and had forged numerous documents with a false name.

Texas Game Wardens and Williamson County Sheriff’s deputies served a search warrant at a Williamson County residence where they found $4,000 cash, two pounds of marijuana and 52 taxidermied animals. The species include fish, white-tailed deer, various sheep, bear, boar, fox, bobcats and other exotic animals.

Game officials believe the animals were illegally hunted in multiple states and Canada.

They said they expect to file more charges at a later date. The investigation continues.
