For many of us, safety is among the top considerations when buying a new car.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration now has an app that provides easy access to its database of safety ratings.

The agency gives cars a one- to five-star rating on front-impacts, side-impacts, accident avoidance, and more. Using the app SaferCar, you simply look up a year, make and model and you’ll find how a vehicle did on those safety tests. The app also lists recalls for a particular car and tips on the proper location to install a car seat. Finally, the app has a form for registering a complaint about your vehicle.

SaferCar is an iOS only app and it's free.

If the car you already own is in bad shape and you're in need of a mechanic right away, then check out the RepairPal app. It'll help find you an auto repair shop based on your location and can get you an estimate on the job. The app also suggests some questions you may want to ask when you get to the shop. You can use the app to keep track of your car maintenance schedule and be alerted to your next service appointment. There's also a one-touch button to get you immediate road side assistance.
