The Lockhart City Council could take action on a proposal to extend bar hours in the city.

It would be good news for the owner of Cedar Hall, who sees the establishment on South Commerce Street as more of an entertainment destination. The bar has a new concert venue that holds 1,500 people, but right now things wrap up a little early.

"Last call and everyone just kind of mellows down, talks for a little while, and just sit there and talk, and everyone leaves," Lockhart resident Scott Cowan said. "There's people that we get every once and a while that will wonder what else is open. Well, down the road is San Marcos and Austin and all that."

Right now closing time in the City of Lockhart is 12 a.m., except on Saturday, when bars can stay open until 1 a.m.

Those times could change if the Lockhart City Council decides to allow clubs and bars to stay open until 2 a.m., which recently happened in San Marcos.

Bar employees say if the city approves the change, it would only affect the weekends. They say later hours could keep customers in town.

At Cedar Hall, the extra time would mean more live music.

"I enjoy listening to live music and hanging out at the bar is always fun. Playing some pool, listening to some music,” Robinson said. “It's always more entertaining that playing pool without music."

The Lockhart City Council will discuss changing closing time at its meeting Tuesday. The last time the council considered it, it failed by a vote of 3 to 4.
