Are you suffering from a swollen head, runny nose or an itchy throat? You’re not alone.

Friday marked the highest cedar pollen count of the season, but there are ways to mitigate the effects of Austin’s most notorious allergen.

"There's nothing wrong with seeing an allergist and going that direction and getting allergy shots, but there are a lot of things you can do naturally to subside your reaction in general," Allison Horan with People’s Pharmacy said.

Their number one recommendation is to get a lot of rest and be sure to take your vitamins.

"Preparing yourself going into the season with increasing your immune system with the zinc, the airborne, the zicam, all those things really do increase your immuno response," Dr. Gina Girolami said.

They recommend a homeopathic vaccine which introduces the body to small amounts of the allergen in order to build resistance.

"It has no adverse effects or toxicity. It is safe to have in the house when you have children and it is effective for as many as 30 to 60 percent of the population,” Girolami said.

But all that preparation doesn’t guarantee immunity to the countless cedar trees spreading pollen.

If you do fall ill, the staff at People’s Pharmacy suggests homeopathic remedies.

Pharmacists also say when you are having a particularly bad allergy day, cut out foods with dairy and sugar because they create extra mucus which can catch pollen in the air.
