If you're an Austin Water customer, the amount to water you use now through March will affect your bills for an entire year.

That's because Austin Water is using your current, average water use to calculate what you'll be charged next year for wastewater.

The utility does this every year during the winter months when you won't likely use much water on your lawn.

"If they can refrain from doing those large water operations and really focus on indoor water conservation, it's going to make a financial impact on their wastewater costs,” Jason Hill with Austin Water said.

The city measures the water going in, but not the water going out.

"Wastewater is not metered,” Hill said. “So all we can do is take an average of water use, because usually that water goes down the drain and that represents how much wastewater that goes back into our system that we treat."

The city has online calculators to help you find ways to use less water. Click here for more information.
