When it comes to places to take a travel break in Texas, “The Beaver” is king.
Buc-ee's has built its reputation not on the number of gas pumps or the size of its stores, but its restrooms.
"When I walked in there it was like, “Wow, this is nice, this is nicer than most convenience stores have,’” visitor Gary Gonzaba said.
Beaver Aplin of Buc-ee’s fame has a simple philosophy when it comes to his toilets.
"It just takes a commitment to the elbow grease to keep it clean," he said.
Friday, the New Braunfels Buc-ee's was named ‘America's Best Restroom.’
"We have nominees each year that are from five-star resorts, from hotels, places that have really ornate lavish entrances and facilities, million-dollar restrooms," Sabrina Zimring with America’s Best Restroom Contest said.
This year, the Texas-sized truck stop took the top spot. The store has 83 toilets, including large private stalls and tile comparable to what you'd find in hotel.
"What it's made of, tile, brass, you could build it out of gold, but if it's dirty, it's just dirty gold," Aplin said.
This weekend, keeping the famed restrooms clean will be a full-time job.
"It is a huge travel weekend with Thanksgiving coming up and so there'll be a lot of people through,” Aplin said. “It's not rocket science, it's just cleaning."
The New Braunfels Buc-ee's had the most votes in the America's Best Restroom contest. This is the 11th year the award has been given.
