A man is in “grave condition” following an officer-involved shooting in South Austin Tuesday evening.

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo said it happened just before 8:40 p.m. when a car was stolen from a dealership on South Congress. The car was then spotted by an officer at the Country Inn & Suites off the northbound side of Interstate-35 near the Woodward exit. The officer and the suspect then engaged in a brief pursuit.

More officers began to arrive on scene, and that’s when the suspect drove at one of the officers with his vehicle.

"At some point the suspect stopped, backed up, moved forward and at one point drove the vehicle directly at one of the officers. The officer in fear of his life fired several rounds, striking the suspect," Acevedo said.

Acevedo said suspect has an extensive criminal history, with multiple felony arrests and outstanding in warrants in several Central Texas jurisdictions, including a warrant for resisting arrest and injuring a police officer in Austin.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure. Both a criminal investigation and an internal, APD administrative investigation are underway. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
