Local health experts want Austin school students to say ‘No!’ to sodas.

Dr. Stephen Pont with Dell Children's Medical Center challenged students Thursday to do without sodas at school.

He made an appearance Perez Elementary in Southeast Austin where kids are learning how to be healthy by exercising and eating and drinking right.

Experts say childhood obesity is an epidemic and can lead to adult-related diseases.

Dr. Pont says it's an issue that isn't confined to schools..

"So we think of Austin as being a healthy city—and it is a healthy city—but childhood obesity and adult obesity is still a huge problem here,” Dr. Pont said. “We see about a third of kids in Austin are challenged by their weight. We see some communities in Austin are even challenged more up to two-thirds of kids in some schools are challenged by their weight so this is a huge problem for everybody."

Instead of soda, kids are urged to drink water or healthy juices. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
