Controversial express toll lanes on MoPac are now on the fast track to reality.
The MoPac Improvement Project received final approval from the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority Friday. The project involves 11-miles of express toll lanes from Lady Bird Lake to Parmer Lane.
Crews will be adding one express lane in each direction, and the existing lanes on MoPac will remain toll-free. Officials say the toll lanes will use variable pricing and rates will go up when traffic is heavy and down when traffic is light.
Construction is set to start on the toll lanes by summer 2013. Planners say the entire Mopac Improvement Project, which includes seven miles of sound walls, bike and pedestrian improvements and the tolled lanes will be completed by 2016.
“This project will reduce congestion for commuters, enhance quality of life for those in the surrounding neighborhoods through the addition of sound walls and improve air quality in the region,” Senator Kirk Watson said.
The total cost of the project is expected to be under $200 million.
