A year after the Bastrop County Complex fire destroyed 1,645 homes in Bastrop County, volunteers are planting memorial flags, one for each house lost to the blaze.

Paige Lions Club President Norma Chalmers led the effort to stake each one of the symbols for those who suffered.

"Our community center was open to a lot of victims,” Chalmers said. “We had a lot of people pitching in, bringing in clothes and food and people slept in the community center for days."

To the group of volunteers, the seeds of good deeds are planted to remember the good times.

“I see the community coming together and it's oh so blessed," volunteer Joann Villegas said.

Another volunteer with a nimble hobby wasted no time to chip in.

“We all just crocheted or knitted and we donated to whoever needs the clothes or towels or whatever we made,” Lynda Thorsen said.
