In the video above, YNN’s Chie Saito shares some of the programs offered at Killeen ISD’s Career Center.

The start of each school year provides an opportunity for students to start fresh.

That’s especially true at Killeen Independent School District’s new career center. Programs offered at the new center are expected to prepare students for the specific careers they are interested in.

"It really makes an impact,” instructor Rebecca Hammontree said. “It gives them a leg up when they're going to school. It also provides them with a career, a job, if they're going to school.”

Health science is one of 16 career paths the center offers.

A state-of-the-art lab built to look like a standard nursing ward will help students receive the training and skills needed for nurse aid certification—a stepping stone towards nursing school.

"I think school should be the place that you go to do things you couldn't even dream about doing anywhere else," Michael Owens, instructor, said.

Students can also choose a path in information technology as part of the Cisco Networking Academy.

"The Cisco Networking Academy is the stuff behind the walls, that goes between the buildings, that goes in the closets that you never see," Owens said. "The people who we will be training will be the people who will not only be working with the equipment, setting up and installing it, but also one of the things that we do is teach the kids how to design a network."

Inside the 140,000 square foot building, few classrooms will be found. Instead, there’s space for a working salon for students interested in cosmetology and a shop for students interested in becoming an automotive technician.

"You can only get so much from reading a book, you don't know how to fix a car until you open the hood, got underneath it," instructor Jason Collar said.

They are skills the instructors say are in high demand.

"The public has a view of auto technicians as a grease ball, someone who is always dirty up to their elbows in grease and oil,” Collar said. “That's not the case anymore with modern automobiles. They're really much more computer than they are mechanical."

The community is invited to tour the career center during a dedication ceremony on Aug. 26 at 2 p.m. The center is located at 1320 Stagecoach Drive.
