Marching bands across Central Texas are getting ready for football season.

As preparation, Northwest Austin’s Vandegrift High School band had their annual March-a-thon Saturday. Hundreds of students marched through Steiner Ranch to raise money for uniforms and food.

The Vandegrift Vipers have been working hard, practicing twice a day since August 6.

"We practice early enough so that it doesn't get over a hundred," drum major Kelly Schriner said.

Then the student band goes inside for an afternoon practice.

"One of the mantras that we tell the kids is, you can only control how hard you work, and the rest will take care of itself. So they just really, really, really worked their butts off," band director Jeremy Spicer said.

And the work is paying off. The four-year-old program came in ninth last year out of 250 Texas High school bands.

The March-a-thon brought in $12,000 last year. This year the band hopes to raise $15,000 to $20,000. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
