The Summer Olympics have come to a close but one group is hoping their practice can be part of the games next time around.
U.S.A. Yoga's Regional Championships took place in Austin Sunday. Competitors showed off different postures to try to make it to the next level.
Yoga is a sport that's fairly new in the U.S., but it’s a long-standing tradition in India. It's a discipline competitors say deserves a place in the Olympics.
"It's the same spirit that the competitors have when they go in there. It's not about the result, it's about the whole journey and the training that goes on for being on that stage for all of three minutes," Competitor and Yoga Instructor Jeff Chen said.
Competitor Saba Hajiebrahimi said she hopes to inspire others to try yoga.
"I think the whole competition is not really about competing, it's about inspiring others to start yoga. I think if people see kids or adults they are like, 'oh, if they can do it, I can do it,'" she said.
Winners will compete in the National Championship next March. For more on yoga competitions, visit usayoga.org.
