Hundreds of volunteers did their part Saturday to make Lady Bird Lake a little bit cleaner.

The group of about 300 volunteers scoured the shoreline, both in and out of the water, for litter, cleaning up as they went.

The event was organized as part of a joint effort between Keep Austin Beautiful and the Watershed Protection Department.

"Lady Bird Lake is one of the areas where Keep Austin Beautiful gets the most calls about," Ladye Anne Wofford with Keep Austin Beautiful said. "It's really hazardous to the health of the life in the water, and it also effects the water quality. So even though sometimes you can't see it, there's always something lurking."

Will Smith was one of the volunteers who dedicated his day off to find trash in the water.

"I think it's sort of surprising, people are a little bit more inconsiderate than probably what they should be," Smith said. "It's a good thing, helping out with the picking up with the trash, and the nice parts of our city."

Saturday wasn't all about hard work. Volunteers had a chance to participate in a contest to see who could find the most unusual piece of trash. One of the past winners found a wedding dress in the lake, with the price tag still attached.
