The City of Austin could have dozens of new firefighters, thanks to a new grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

According to the Austin Fire Department, FEMA will be awarding AFD about $5.1 million as part of a nationwide grant program.

The money would pay the salaries of 36 additional firefighters for two years. AFD would have to take on that cost in the third year.

AFD is working to have four people staffed on every fire engine with a ladder to comply with national standards.

The department had planned on meeting that goal by 2019, but officials said the grant will help them reach it sooner. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
