Demolition began Tuesday on the Aquarena Tower, located just behind the Aquarena Center in San Marcos, Texas. The landmark's removal is part of a $5 million restoration project at Aquarena Springs.

The restoration is not the only reason for the landmark's demolition. The tower also poses a safety risk. Last summer, a student at Texas State University died after falling from the tower.

"The presence of the tower is unfortunately an invitation to adventurous young people," Andrew Sansom of the River Systems Institute said.

Constructed during the Aquarena Amusement Park's heyday, the Aquarena Tower weighs about 200,000 pounds and is the last thing to be demolished in the project. The steel tower will be recycled following the demolition.

Green Guys Recycling is in charge of the project. Officials expect the demolition to be complete by the end of the week. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
