If your little one is struggling to read and loves animals, try including a dog during reading time.

The Austin Dog Alliance has partnered with Recycled Reads to offer Bow Wow Reading Instruction.

Austin Dog Alliance volunteer Jennie Chen said it's a unique program where trained dogs are paired with youngsters while they brush up on their reading skills.

"There's a lot of research that shows when you pet an animal, you release Oxytocin. It makes you feel good. It's very calming and relaxing and stress reducing. So when you pair that with a fun activity that's also very calming like reading, you get double the fun," Chen said.

You can bring your child to the next Bow Wow reading session this Friday from noon to 1 p.m. That's at Recycled Reads at 5335 Burnet Road. There's no cost to participate. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
