The Texas Hill Country is already known for its barbecue, music and picturesque views, but it’s fostering a reputation for yet another attraction -- wine.

Doug Kitchens works at Grape Creek Winery outside Fredericksburg along Highway 290, colloquially known as “Wine Road 290.” He said word has spread through the wine community that Central Texas is now a major player.

"It's the number two visited winery destination in the United States behind Napa Valley right now,” Kitchens said. “It definitely has the tourist attractions, the great wine and great places to come and just a beautiful landscape."

Central Texas is not entirely new to the wine world.

Dana Barber has been visiting Wine Road 290 for years. She says the strip of road outside of Fredericksburg offers visitors much of what they could find in Northern California.

"Some of these wines tasted just like what we were finding in Napa and a lot of them we liked even better," Barber said. "The winery is beautiful, the estate is gorgeous, the grounds and everything. The patio is nice and the staff is friendly. It's very, very similar to what you might find in California.
