Central Texas teens eager to enter the ring are learning from some of the best.
Austin police and a few other volunteers, including professional boxer Alexis Camacho, are teaching Central Texas youngsters a thing or two about boxing.
Kids ranging in age from 12 to 17 are in for a week-long boxing camp hosted by the Police Activities League of Austin. Senior Officer Phil Contatore said the nonprofit puts the camp on for free thanks to community donations.
"We put this on to build a bond with the community, the youth and the police officers in Austin, to try and open up that conversation between us and them, and let them know that we're the friends. We're not the enemy. We're the good guys," he said.
PAL also wants to invite everyone to see a free boxing show Saturday at 6 p.m.
