Suspicious NE Austin death now considered murder

  • Text size: + -

Update -- Austin police are now investigating the suspicious death in Northeast Austin as the city’s 15th murder of the year.

The victim has been identified as William Ervin, an employee with the Texas Department of Public Safety. An autopsy found he died of a gunshot wound, according to police.

Officers say a person reported being “flagged down” by a subject who displayed a firearm to the victim before the victim fled. That incident occurred in 11200 block of Sprinkle Cutoff Road at 11:25 p.m. Sunday.

Due to the incident’s close proximity to where Ervin’s body was found, police are looking into a relation between the two incidents.

The subject is described to have the following characteristics, per APD:

• Black male
• 20s to 30s
• 5’7” to 5’9” in height
• 150 to 170 lbs.
• Dark complexion
• Short, shaved hair
• He was last seen wearing a red t-shirt with a graphic design and dark baggy shorts.
• He was last seen driving a 1995 to 2000 model purple Honda Accord.

Anyone with information on either incident is asked to called APD’s Homicide Tip Line at (512) 477-3588 or CrimeStoppers at (512) 472-TIPS.

Earlier -- Police are investigating a suspicious death in Northeast Austin.

A man’s body was found inside of a wrecked car just before 12:30 a.m. Monday. Police say the accident happened just north of the intersection at Samsung Boulevard and Sprinkle Cutoff road. When officers arrived they found a car crashed into a tree and dead body inside.
Police believe the driver’s death was not connected to the crash and are continuing to investigate.

"When the medical examiner’s office arrived, they determined that male had trauma that was not consistent with the car crash so at the point it became an investigation into a suspicious death instead of a traffic fatality," APD spokesperson Veneza Aguinaga said.

The victim’s identity has not yet been released.
