There are eight different grocery stores within a 10-mile radius in South Austin, including a new Whole Foods.

The close proximity of all the stores has each establishment competing for shoppers’ dollars.

"We sell the highest quality natural and organic products, and South Austin especially has been asking us to bring that down here," Rebecca Scofield with Whole Foods Market said.

However, organic produce and products aren’t the only things attracting customers to the new store.

"A lot of children's items or kids, stuff. Sometimes their prices can be higher, but they also offer lots of sales. I usually spread my dollar between the standard H-E-B, Randalls and Whole Foods," Whole Foods shopper Frederika Tausch said.

Just down the street, Randalls is practically empty.

"I go to the closest place, I want to get back to work as soon as possible," Randalls shopper Zachary Christopher said.

While there are some doing their shopping at Randall’s and Whole Foods, loyal H-E-B shoppers say it’s still the best deal in town.

"H-E-B still has a great value, so it's about prices, yes, you have to in this economy," H-E-B shopper Lynda Waggoner said.

The nearby Costco is where most people get their toilet paper, their bulk items, but that's not all it's good for.

"I eat a lot of fruit and even though there are only three of us at home I come here twice a week,” Costco shopper Margaret Marchan said.

So even though there are several places to get groceries in this area, shoppers like having the variety, and at the very least, the new Whole Foods just adds a little ‘healthy’ competition into the mix.
