Like a lot of small central Texas towns, Bastrop’s population is booming, and as it grows, the healthcare needs of the community are changing.

St. David’s Healthcare opened the doors to its new Bastrop emergency room to the public Saturday. Starting Monday, when the residents of Bastrop need to visit an emergency room, they won’t have to make the trip all the way to Austin.

"No longer will they have to drive miles to get this type of care, they'll just be minutes away from it in their neighborhood," Sally Gillam with St. David's said. "You can come in with fractures. You can come in with heat exhaustion. You can come in with chest pain, abdominal pain, anything that you feel would be appropriate to come to an emergency department, you can come here."

The new center has all the latest medical technology, like wireless remote blood testing units, and a highly trained team of doctors, nurses and specialists are equipped to handle any medical situation.

"Should you have a problem that is a little more extensive and requires specialists, you will be transferred to St David's South Austin Medical Center, or the hospital of your choice," Gillam said.

But most importantly, they say it puts life-saving care just minutes away.

St. David's Emergency Center in Bastrop will begin operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week starting on Monday.
