Two new candidates vie for Waco mayor seat

  • Text size: + -

Next month, Waco voters will elect a new mayor.

Earlier this year Jim Bush, the city's current mayor, announced he would not seek reelection.

Two candidates are now vying to fill Waco’s top seat. Antwone “Tony” Taulton says it’s time to shake things up in the Central Texas town.

"Waco just needs a drastic change. Waco has just traditionally done the things as usual, the norm, and it's time for a change," he said.

Taulton says poverty is the biggest issue facing the city.

"We have to bring in jobs, economic development. Waco is centrally located between Dallas and Austin, we could make this a tourist attraction," he said.

His opponent, current Mayor Pro Tem Malcolm Duncan Jr., says he will take recommendations from the city's poverty solutions committees and organize the community to address the problem.

"Convene a larger group of responsible parties. The employers, the health providers, the school district, nonprofits and let’s put that plan to work," Duncan said.

Duncan has been on the council for the past two years, which he believes will make a difference if elected to office.

"The mayor in a city like Waco really only has one vote their primary ability is to build consensus,” Duncan said. "I've got the experience and the ability to lead the council. It's been a good two years and I think we've got a lot more work to do."

Taulton believes he has the ideas that will help Waco reach its full potential.

"We can't just look out for our own. We have to look out for everybody. If we come together as a city, unite as a city, we can take Waco to the next level," he said.

Early voting begins Monday and continues through May 8. Voters in Waco's first district will also elect a council member.

May 12th is Election Day.
