One nonprofit is building children’s self-esteem and character all through teaching them the sport of golf.

Austin-based First Tee of Greater Austin works with hundreds of children, teaching them to play golf through their after-school program.

"We want to start teaching them as young as we can get them to understand that these are things that are going to help them throughout their entire life, not just in one golf class," Cyndi Hernandez, instructor and program coordinator, said

Nikos Lopez, 9 years old, said he wants to learn golf because his dad plays.

"It's kind of challenging and I like challenges,” he said. “Putting is the hardest part of golf and you get to really concentrate on it and it's really fun."

First Tee is about more than just playing golf, though. The program works to teach kids values and character.

"You can use golf to instill all of those different values as well as healthy habits," Hernandez said.

The First Tee of Greater Austin funds scholarships for youth in need and strives to bring programs to more Austin-area schools. Click here to learn more about how you can help. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
