The Pedernales Fire One has destroyed an estimated 20 homes and has grown to 500 acres, according to officials with the City of Austin.
The fire was first reported at approximately 12:00 p.m. near the intersection of Paleface Ranch Road and Highway 71.
The fire jumped across the highway and the Stagecoach Ranch subdivision was evacuated and witnesses report that homes have burned in the area. All homes in a three-mile radius of Stagecoach Ranch were also evacuated.
The fire spread across the Pedernales River was reportedly made it into northern Hays County around 6:00 p.m.
Evacuations are happening along Stagecoach Ranch Road, Overland Ranch Road, Deadwood Stage Road, Stagecoach Ranch Loop and Cripple Creek Road.
Homes in the area between Bell Springs Road, Lost Creek Road and Grand Summit Road have were also evacuated. An official with Hays County estimates the total number of evacuees to be approximately 500 people.
The Bell Springs area evacuation has been canceled, but the others remain.
All available units have been called in to help with evacuations and to help battle the blaze.
No reports of injuries or residences burned in Hays County.
The fire is slowing, but not yet contained.
