During the summer in Central Texas, air conditioning is more than a comfort. It’s a necessity. And it was a bad day for the air conditioning system at the Austin Human Society’s animal shelter to stop working.
According to those with the Humane Society, a power outage damaged a motor in its AC system, causing all of the shelter’s dogs and cats to suffer through Sunday’s record-tying heat.
Hoping to get as many animals as possible to cooler homes, all adoptions were free Sunday and will be Monday as well.
"We have fans going. We're working with an AC company to get it back up. Because it blew out the motor, we're likely not going to be able to fix it until late tomorrow,” Amanda Ryan-Smith with the Austin Humane Society said. “We're encouraging the public to come out and adopt. Animals are free today and tomorrow."
