Tubers on the Comal and Guadalupe rivers in New Braunfels will now have to be a little more creative with their beverages if they want to drink while they float.

Monday, the New Braunfels City Council approved a ban on cans, bottles and other disposable containers on rivers in the city limits.

Close to 500 people filled the New Braunfels Civic Center during Monday’s meeting to weigh in on the issue.

City leaders say the prohibition is necessary to curb excessive littering along both the Comal and Guadalupe rivers.

River outfitters say banning cans and other disposable containers will hurt their business and harm the local economy.

Some say the prohibition is just a back-door ban on booze.

"Let's call it for what it is. It's not a ban on aluminum or anything else. For years what has the city been trying to get off that river?” river outfitter Russell Bell said. “It's beer and alcohol."

Some who spoke in favor of the new rules say it's not hard to see the problems trash is causing to the rivers and the city's reputation.

"It isn't Las Vegas that is the goal of most New Braunfelsers, but yet what's happening in the Comal is staying in the Comal," container ban supporter Bob Krueger said.

An attorney representing businesses affected by the ban says a lawsuit is inevitable.

The new ban on disposable containers only applies to the Comal and Guadalupe Rivers inside the New Braunfels city limits.

The new rules will go into effect in 2012.
