A disc golf course planned for East Austin may be postponed indefinitely.

Before closing the Pease Park course at the end of 2010, the City of Austin bought 26 acres of land to open a replacement course adjoining Roy Guerrero Colorado River Park.

Soon after, concerns about trees there knocked the plan off course.

“We stood down on the 26 acres due to some concerns with the neighborhood. We're not going to rush into Plan B, a different site. We're going to be very deliberate about how we proceed,” Marty Stump with Austin Parks and Recreation said.

Residents near the proposed course expressed concern for the park’s trees, some of which measure nearly 58 inches in diameter.

“We understand that there's a demand and a desire for disc golf. We're looking for the right sites and the appropriate funding to bring those facilities online,” Stump said.

The city is looking further west within the park for a new site. There are no immediate plans for the 26 acres of land that the city purchased, something that irks disc station owner Damon Neth.

“We're kind of really losing our legacy as one of the leading disc golf cities when we're losing courses and there aren't courses being opened to replace them,” he said.

A number of disc golf events are coming through the area this year, including a charity event at the Hyatt Lost Pines, which will feature actors from the NBC drama, “Friday Night Lights.”
