A 6-month-old boy died in San Marcos Friday morning and the man who was taking care of the child has been arrested.
Richard Perez Jr., 20, was charged with injury to a child, which is a first degree felony.
Hays County investigators said Perez was caring for the boy while the baby's mother was at work. He admitted to dropping the baby on his head.
Police became involved after Perez and the child were involved in a minor accident on I-35.
"The injury to the child wasn't consistent to the collision that the officers investigated. It was a very minor collision," Hays County Sheriff Allen Bridges said.
Investigators said the baby received CPR at the scene of an accident but was pronounced dead at Central Texas Medical Center.
Investigators said they're trying to determine if Perez staged the collision to cover up the baby's death.
Bond for Perez is set at $500,000. He faces up to life in prison if convicted.
A first degree felony carries with it a possible sentence of life in prison.
Perez is being held on $500,000 bond.
