Picnics are under rated, but why not ditch the basket and get off the ground to spice up the tradition?

Designer Kelly LaPlante uses a few fancy touches to take what she calls an “inspired approach” to a modern picnic.

“If you want to do something special for your friends and kind of blow their minds, invite them over for a picnic or meet them at a park,” LaPlante said. “It’s completely unexpected and amazing."

LaPlante suggests hitting the thrift stores for vintage dishes that add character but don’t hurt your wallet. Even if the glassware breaks, at least it only cost a few cents.

Amy Hadley grabs some more tips on a picture-perfect picnic in this “House Proud” in the video above.

When a family grows, the family’s home often must grow as well—easier said than done.

When Justin Thomas and his wife Sarah moved to Austin from Chicago, they wanted to find a home with neighbors nearby. The couple lived in Chicago for 10 years and fell in love with that urban lifestyle.

Luckily, they found the right real estate agent who found them the right home on the right lot. The lot had gone undeveloped for years before a builder sectioned it off and put four homes up, making the property more affordable for the individual homeowners.

Listen to their story in the video above.

From painting the ceiling and layering in some cool rugs to using a vintage dresser as a changing table and picking up some fun baskets for toy storage, our Amy Hadley has made her 6-month-old Liam's room all his own.

Check out the "House Proud" segment above to find out about all the cool stuff in Liam's room — including his great-grandmother's rocking chair and tons of trinkets from the two years Amy and her husband spent in Prague — as well as how you can decorate your nursery in a style that your child can really grow into.

Maybe your style is very Western and ranch or maybe you love modern, but now you don't actually have to choose between the two.

Hacienda owner Jessica Beattie has invented a new style called modern ranch, which is great for outdoor entertaining as well as things like tailgates, concerts and barbecues.

"Elements from urban, sophisticated clean lines, but using natural materials, reclaimed woods, steel, leather and bringing it together in an eclectic way," Beattie said.

Sarah and Todd own a 1930s-era bungalow that has plenty of history—but it didn’t come with a front porch.

That’s until they came up with their own design for a light, airy porch that looks like it has been there for decades. They started with just a slab of concrete.

“I actually designed it by Pinterest. I took pictures of boards that I liked, beams that I liked,” Sarah said. “Basically I printed out my Pinterest board for our builder to make it for us.”

Now, the couple and their toddler enjoy coffee in the mornings and wonderful Texas sunsets from the front of their home. Check it out in this “House Proud” in the video above.

Sometimes the art of furniture is the art of reimagining.

Michael Gutierrez is a Mockingbird Domestics craftsman who adds custom touches to existing pieces and also creates completely one-of-a-kind furniture.

Gutierrez is currently working on a piece thought up by a local designer that, when complete, will be an entertainment center.

"It started out as a slab of walnut that we got from the local sawmill," he said. "It was about 2 inches thick, and we milled it down to 1 1/2 inches."

What used to be one home that stood alone on more than an acre of land turned out to be a great opportunity for PSW Real Estate to develop.

"We knew that we could do lots of different things, so we built 11 homes," PSW Real Estate's Anthony Siela said. "[They] are relatively affordable for the neighborhood, which would draw in the families needed to keep the schools alive and also to have some quality of life that may not have been possible for the 10 others."

Siela says the homes, which are in the Forest Trail development, are eco-friendly and feature modern architecture but still retain some semblance of the Tarrytown neighborhood.

There are so many architectural gems around Austin if you know where to find them.

Kimberly McAfee found one of her own in a 1955 house designed by beloved Austin architect Arthur Dallas Stenger.

"There are many of his bungalows in the area, and I feel very fortunate to have gotten this one," McAfee said.

The house was mostly preserved in its original condition, so by just removing a few old air conditioning units and some overgrowth, McAfee was able to bring the house back to its prime.

Plus, the couple says they find it comforting knowing everything has a place, and love walking just about anywhere. Take a peek at their pad in this “House Proud.”

Why should Christmas trees get all the attention when Christmas lights are so fun and magical?

Designer Kelly LaPlante has come up with a few unexpected ways to use lights this holiday.

She suggests creating a sort of faux-mistletoe with Christmas lights. The finished product brings a warm, enchanting look to a room which is not holiday exclusive.

You can also try wrapping lights under a table to provide some much-needed light to a dark space.

Whether you have a traditional live Christmas tree in your living room or something a little more exotic, decorating your tree can be a bit daunting.

There are so many baubles, lights and ornaments – where do you start? Well, Robin Bond of Robin Bond Interiors suggests going in with a plan.

She started with a selection of green, brown and gold decorations for her tree and split the design into four quadrants for even decorating. The biggest, heaviest ornaments go on first, then smaller decorations add color and sparkle, she said.

Bond also likes putting natural ornaments on her tree, like decorated pine cones, twigs and leaves.

Thanksgiving is all about traditions, but you don't have to go traditional with your Thanksgiving table.

Interior designer Maureen Stevens set a non-traditional, fall-themed table perfect for a Thanksgiving feast. Berries, orange roses and a brass candelabra centerpiece help keep the table seasonal without being too obviously Thanksgiving.

"No rules," she said. "Just make it beautiful and stylish."

The art created by Bryce Dishongh is certainly its own brand of unique. The local artist creates pet portraits, but with a twist. Your feline or pup is featured in Victorian-style outfits.

“I kind of like to mix the high-brow Victorian, very formal look with the totally low-brow end of dog portraits,” Dishongh said.

The result is custom art that pet lovers and quirky decorators will love.

“It’s a little cheesy, a little hokey, but that’s the challenge,” Dishongh said. “To make something that is conventionally not that cool really cool – as cool as I can make it.”

Part of what Dishongh earns from his art business goes to Austin Pets Alive.

If you've got a succulent plant at home and you've just thrown it in a pot, you're doing it wrong.

"Even if you don't love plants, there's so many fun ways to incorporate them into your house," Monique Capanelli of Articulture Designs said.

Capanelli's designs incorporate succulents into centerpieces, terrariums and even furniture. Additionally, she says succulents are good for people who aren't good with plants because they're fairly drought-resistant and can be ignored for long periods of time.

Brass is making a major comeback when it comes to home interiors. Maureen Stevens, a local interior designer, loves the trend and has already incorporated it into her own home.

"It's the metal of the moment," Stevens said.

One interior accent she uses are some classy brass candlesticks.

"I am a vintage shopper,” Stevens said. “So I got this from a very, very small town. It's called Lumberton, Texas. Every time I travel through the small towns of Texas, I have to stop at a vintage shop.”

While she’s not sure her husband is on board with antique shopping, the practice has scored her a number of unique pieces for her home interior collection.

"It's really not just one kind of candlesticks,” Stevens said. “It's different shapes and different heights. When I just sat down and put them all together, it all just jives."

If you can't afford real brass, there are ways to fake it.

"One of the main things that is my secret as far as brass is this gold leaf pen,” she said. “For little tiny objects, or little crevices, this is what I use. I have those terrarium lanterns. They came in silver, so what I did was gold leaf each panel, so it would have the feel that I wanted.”

Larger objects can be painted to take on a metallic brass hue.

“I have these branches that I spray painted,” Stevens said. “I have this letter S, which is a vintage metal. It was yellow before and I spray painted that as well. This picture frame that I had to hand paint, so it would match all the other brass materials and items I have in the house."

Stevens feels that the gleaming look of brass lends a very sophisticated and modern glamour feel to a room.

An historic home built in 1938 had Moon Tower Design Build help them with their upgrade.

When designing the home, Maggie McIntosh of Moon Tower Design focused on bringing out the character of the family. She says the key to designing is working with what already exists.

“It’s really fun in Austin working with these older homes and being able to kind of bring a modern and contemporary twist to them, and building on what is already there,” McIntosh said.

Just because you have a new baby doesn't mean you have to take your fashion sense back to pre-school.

Erin Williamson, of www.design-crisis.com, decided to keep design in mind when decorating nursery for baby Luke. She wanted to make the space fun for a child, with lots of texture and things to look at, while making it flow with the rest of the house.

She also wanted to make the room comfortable for herself and versatile enough to change with her growing baby.

With neutral walls, the space is accented with a funky patterned chair, a fuzzy rug and vintage art.
