Buying a Formula One car costs millions, and just getting the feel of one could set you back hundreds of thousands.
Écurie25 is an international, membership-only car sharing program for drivers wanting a high performance sports car about 30 to 40 days a year.
Drivers have eight cars to choose from, including a Lamborghini Gallardo and a Ferrari F430.
All the vehicles showcase technology developed by their respective Formula One research teams.
“It’s more than just driving the car. It is more of the social interaction that goes on around that,” Jacob White with Écurie said. “Frankly, it’s the best way to own a super car without owning all the problems, depreciation, insurance and maintenance.”
Still, drivers looking for a little more commitment turn to local dealerships like John Eagle European in Northwest Austin.
John Eagle the number one volume Lotus dealership in North America last year. Sonny Morgan with the dealership says that could be, in part, to Formula One.
“A lot of people are getting more so into learning about Formula One,” he said. “With that, they understand that Lotus is an integral part of Formula One right now.”
The Lotus team continues to have podium finishes at this year’s races. Beyond that, Morgan says Lotus engineering is among the best value on the market.
A typical car retails between $75,000 and $95,000 brand new.
“Even before Circuit of the Americas came, there is a lot of people who love automobiles,” Morgan said. “What better place to drive a car that is one of the best handling cars on the planet than the Texas Hill Country?”
Morgan says he’s also sold several high end sports cars to Formula One fans who don’t call Austin home year round, but want to drive their favorite team’s car while in town.
Many of the super luxury sports cars are hand crafted. Still, they depreciate like any other vehicle, some as much as $50,000 in the first year.
