Hundreds of people have a better understanding about new rules for young undocumented immigrants.

An educational immigration forum was held in East Austin Tuesday night.

Last week, President Obama announced students or high school graduates who entered the country illegally as children might qualify for temporary papers allowing them to legally work for two years.

Those who attended the educational forum Tuesday were advised not to rush into action since the government has not yet established rules to guide the new process.

Organizers of the forum say some immigration lawyers have already claimed otherwise. Some even want to charge potential clients $5,000.

"It's intuitive for these people to really want to go to a lawyer, so they're finding anyone who says, 'I have a solution for you now.' These people are very vulnerable, very unaware of what's going on out there, so it's very important to reach out to them to avoid these things from happening," The University Leadership Initiative spokesperson Adrian Reyna said.

The University Leadership Initiative is a group of undocumented University of Texas students. They hosted Tuesday night’s forum.

Another forum is expected to be held in the coming weeks. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
