Officials with the Austin Independent School District released preliminary results of recent testing with the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, or STAAR.

The state scores the test at three levels--Level 1 is unsatisfactory, Level 2 is satisfactory and Level 3 is advanced.

According to AISD, most of the district's students scored well in Algebra and Biology. The district also did well in World Geography.

However, only about half of all AISD high school students passed the writing portion of the test.

AISD's Chief Performance Officer Bill Caritj said that the state set a high standard for writing. Overall, he called the preliminary results encouraging, but added there's clearly room for improvement.

"Identifying the areas within the new test where--that are challenges and then weaving, sort of weaving those particular standards throughout the curriculum so that they're repeated more frequently and that's a common strategy we're hearing from a lot of districts,” Caritj said.

The results were presented to the Austin ISD board at their meeting Monday night.
