Dan Robertson

  • Text size: + -

Traffic Anchor and Meteorologist

Native Texan and familiar face to Austinites for more than a decade, Dan Robertson has been fortunate to spend his entire 20-year television career in only two cities.

A graduate of UT Austin with a BS in Communications and a minor in Earth Sciences, Dan started behind the scenes on the production crew at Austin NBC affiliate KXAN in the late 1980s.

Dan got his first chance to be in front of the cameras at KTRE-TV in Lufkin, Texas as weather anchor in 1989. Honing his forecasting and severe weather coverage skills in the active East Texas region, Dan received the National Weather Association Seal of Approval in 1991. In that time, Doppler radar and remote weather sensor networks did not yet exist.

Realizing the need for trained storm spotters in the Piney Woods, Dan launched ‘Project Tornado’, a Skywarn storm spotter training program coupled with a severe weather safety program in local schools. His efforts to promote weather safety in the region were recognized with Special Service Awards from the National Weather Service in 1992 and again in 1994.

1995 brought Dan back home to Austin to be part of the original start-up news team for the new CBS affiliate KEYE-TV where he served as weather anchor for ’K-EYE Opener News’ and later as a “computer correspondent” – one of the first efforts in television journalism to use the fledgling Internet as a primary source of information.

Dan returned to KXAN as weather anchor in 2000, quickly becoming an Austin favorite on weekend mornings. Always live on location forecasting weather and covering interesting events, the show was must-see TV for people looking for weekend activities. Weekdays, Dan sharpened his reporting skills covering the Science and Technology beat until 2006.

After a short stint in state government, Dan brings his unique spin on weather back to Austin television viewers in 2011 with Time Warner Cable News Austin.
